How to: Leverage social studies and science standards on Newsela

The Newsela Team
Mar 3, 2021

In our ongoing How To blog series, we shared that every text with Newsela ELA includes a 4-question multiple-choice quiz that's aligned to ELA standards. But did you know that Newsela can be used for standards-based instruction beyond the ELA classroom? With access to both Newsela Social Studies and Newsela Science, you can find texts aligned to your specific state standards displayed at the top of each article. No matter what subject you’re teaching, you can be confident that your content is both engaging and mapped to your state standards.

When it comes to teaching social studies, content should foster opportunities that create meaningful connections with the past, present, and future, while still supporting your instructional goals. Content in Newsela Social Studies is aligned to both state standards and national frameworks with embedded resources that support teachers and promote inquiry in the classroom. And with up-to-date and engaging articles, students can continue to relate their lessons back to their lives.

We also know that science is becoming more complex to teach. With Newsela Science, we focus on finding content that not only builds core content knowledge that is aligned to state standards and the NGSS, but also supports students as they develop science and engineering skills. That way, teachers are able to integrate literacy into their science instruction while fostering opportunities for phenomena-based learning and get students thinking like scientists.

Need to teach a specific standard? Use Newsela’s search navigation to see all content that aligns to the specific standards you need, so you can rest assured that you can find the instructional materials that support your lessons.
